$298 PC at Walmart? Let's Talk About It

It's true. This is a low end no nonsense entry level basic system. It runs Windows Vista Home Basic, which is barely an operating system. It uses onboard graphics and audio that are minimal. It has a 1.5gig CPU, which is not the speediest rabbit in the hutch. It does have 1 gig of RAM (memory) and it comes with Open Office installed, both positive features in my opinion. There is a DVD burner included and an 80gig hard drive. The monitor is NOT included.

Vista Home Basic won't run some software applications. Since the beginning of the year many sites have recommended staying away from this cheap, entry level operating system. This offering might be well worth the money if loaded with Windows XP. Those looking to save money might consider spending a few more dollars and purchasing a unit with Vista Home Premium. It will run QuickBooks, Peachtree, etc.

It's neat that OpenOffice is getting some press. This is a very good office suite that is open source and easy to use. It accompanies several different Linux operating systems. As far as the gig of RAM, that's a good idea with any operating system and is the minimum concerning Vista. Dadgumit, this means a trip to the Walmart and an extra dose of Xanax to survive it. I want to see it up close and personal. Doesn't look too bad in the picture, does it?

Anyway, sorry folks. I won't endorse this one. The operating system alone is enough to scare me away.
