Protection III

If you followed the past two posts then you know that we are installing protection on a PC. Go to the DOWNLOADS folder and click on the Ad-aware setup icon. Let it do its thing and when it comes to the final page with the three boxes checked, uncheck all of them. Go to the desktop icon and open the program. In the bottom right corner find 'Check for updates now' and click it. Leave configure alone and click 'Connect'. Let it update and click 'Finish'. Now hit the 'Start' button at the bottom right corner.

In the select a scan mode area turn the red 'X' into a yellow checkmark. Move the dot down to 'Use customize scanning'. Then click on the word 'Customize' just to the right of this line. At the very top find the red dot beside 'Scan within archives', make it yellow and then 'Proceed'. This will change the window back to Preparing System Scan. Click 'Next'.

This will start a scan. Let it complete. Now, if you followed instructions about installing Spybot Search & Destroy then you have to perform one more task. When the scan completes go to the critical tab and find the two blue Windows registry changes that deal with software/policies/microsoft/internet explorer/restrictions and software/policies/microsoft/internet explorer/control panel. Check these two boxes then right click on an empty space and choose 'Add to ignore list'. It should tell you two items will be added to the ignore list . Tell it okay. This stops a conflict between Ad-aware and Spybot Search and Destroy.

After a scan I go into the quarantine list and delete the scans. It's up to you. Just remember, immediately after the SCAN, delete ALL critical and negligible problems found. And UPDATE!!!! Remember? The 'Check for updates now' thangy? This program has new updated definitions listed on an almost daily basis.

Tomorrow we make use of SpywareBlaster. It's easy to install, easy to use and powerful when it comes to defeating spyware orcs.
