Recently two machines have crossed the beach house workbench with desktops that have been taken over by spyware posing as antispyware. People that write this garbage should be rounded up and fed to rabid alligators. Sorry about beating around the bush there...anyway both of these machines had to be wiped, formatted and everything re-installed. Data was saved on one PC but lost on the other.
There is a program that will go a long way to prevent such occurances. It's called DropMyRights and there is a very good article at PCWorld that explains what it does and provides a link to download it. As always, exercise caution when using utilities. Download at your own risk and don't come here bitching if you screw something up.
Does it run at the beach house? Not yet. It will be installed on the laptop, which has Windows XP as an operating system, this weekend. What is used? Windows Vista User Account Control is active and is being monitored by a Firefox extension called IsAdmin.
This combination has been in use a few days and I'll let you know the results. Not running this nifty swifty browser? Click to learn about and download this alternative way to surf the internet. The Internet Explorer 7 browser is a tremendous improvement over IE6, but Firefox just feels better to me. Then there's the Sea Monkey browser/project, but that's a discussion for another time.
I reiterate; download at your own risk and use caution. Read the instructions if you are installing the first time. Hope this helps!
