This is where Elvis grew up. A small, two room dwelling that is called a shotgun house in the Deep South. As I watched Priscilla Presley on Tavis Smiley and David Letterman last night a light bulb went on in my mind. Robin from NH had asked me several months ago to check out the birthplace of Elvis and post some pixs. Frequently I pass by, but this is only the 4th time I've ever stopped. The house is humble, with an old Plymouth from the 30s or 40s parked to the side. A museum, ball field, park, and so forth have been built. There's a local tale about how Elvis donated land and money for a public swimming pool when he played his last performance in Tupelo. He wanted it to be in the shape of a guitar. The city "fathers" squandered the money and Elvis vowed never to play in Tupelo again. Who knows? Anyone have light they can shed on this subject? The special Friday night is on CBS-TV.
