Computer Memory

Recently an old question arose, "What is computer memory?" This is usually followed by, ""Why do I need more?" Memory has several different functions and there are many different types of memory. This could go on and on for pages, but instead of me repeating what has been said go take a look at How Stuff Works. Nice in depth easy to read and navigate article. It has pictures too! Most folks will be interested in How computer Memory Works

Just remember that old adage, 'Memory is like closet space and kitchen cabinets - it's almost impossible to have too much' and keep the word almost in mind.

"Everybody needs his memories. They keep the wolf of insignificance from the door."
~Saul Bellow

The more the better!
New Operating systems can now use more than 2 GB and soon most applications will be running in 64 bit if you are in bed with Microshaft.
Get ready for running machines with 16 to 24 GB of memeory and it will all be usable.
Fun times!

That's memory future. Right now it's just nice to let people in on the know about why 32bit Winders will only show 3.25-3.50gigs of memory instead of 4 gigs when you actually insert 4 gig sticks in a machine. The is a great tutorial for someone wanting to understand the basics of memory "sticks."
