Life's casual and that's a good thing

This has been a nice easy day. Sometimes you just have to sit down and let the batteries recharge. Am looking forward to a good day at work tomorrow followed by the decorating of the Beach House Christmas tree. The red and blue decorations help me celebrate an Ole Miss Christmas, LOL. Next weekend I hope to finish all the shopping.

Tomorrow we shall cook out and do burgers. Be a nice switch from the turkeyfied food that has been enjoyed this week. The weather should be nice with temperatures in the high 50s or low 60s. Early in the afternoon work will call and this weather will help that go by quickly. Then another day of relaxation! The evening will be topped off by watching my newest Jimmy Buffett DVD.

My Odyssey coffee came in and it's time for another cup! Everyone stay safe and keep the welfare of your fellow humans in mind this season.

Marty from West Tennessee emailed and asked about popup stoppers, blockers, killers, etc. I recommend two. Check the links for AnalogX and surf to the Network section. There you will find POW which has garnered 100% approval from all people that have tried it after coming here. This is an old trusted website full of goodies and they are FREE! The other is the Google toolbar. Just install the toolbar and be sure n let them anonymously record some stuff (I think they can be trusted, LOL) and use the default settings. This has many neat features and the pop up blocker is awesome. That's right there is no link posted. If you aren't using Google then you must be in the giggle house or comtemplating stone. Only the insane and cave dwellers haven't used this wonderful site!

Steven, From Aberdeen, MS. was having problems with sound drivers. His Hewlett Packard was upgraded from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 and the sound card resides on the motherboard. After spending hours searching for a sound driver on the HP website he gave up. Then he found Driverguide.com. Nice site that posts drivers for many applications. So, if needing a hard to find driver visit this site. Be sure and read the reviews that accompany the downloads and see if it does work for others. Great site!

Okay I did something last night that I need not do again. I tried to watch the 'Big 2003 Awards' thangy on VH1. Wanted to see Matchbox 20 and Shania Twain perform. Both of these performances were stellar. Cheesy Bill Maher (a worm of a human being that should win the faux intellectual award for life) introduced Natalie Maines as the winner of most outrageous statement of the year award. She continued to make horrible statements and apparently doesn't know when to shut her ugly, smarmy, dumbass mouth! Why give this award anyway? It's like giving an award for the best mass murderer. Lord help us!

Please consider the next statement carefully. DON'T BUY DIXIE CHICKS CDs!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope these unAmerican jerks move to Iran or France where they belong. On getting in the way of a well planned road trip...

The Laundry Witch just messaged me and said get off my lazy butt and post. What's that stuff in turkey that makes you sleep? Tryptophan? Well it was rampant here yesterday. The couch monster is in league with it too. K, saw some great DVDs yesterday, acted like I cleaned the house and put up the Christmas tree. Then my oldest daughter and her husband came by for a visit.

They are up from Baton Rouge and are sequestered at the ex's house due to a huge family get together. So I was able to spend a few hours with them and it was absolutely great!! They won't be here for Christmas. It's Jay's parents' turn since they were here last year. Come the 1st week in February I dare anyone or anything to get in the way of my first visit to Baton Rouge since they moved there.

Enough is enough. Have vacation days I will lose and that WILL not happen. Seems like something always comes up to trash my planned time off. So, other family members, work associates, the hidden agenda planners of the days of my life, all meteorologists, you are on notice. Screw with me the first week in February, 2004, and I won't be the last one to die! That's it! Happy trails! Hope to be back tomorrow!

TGIF again!

Up early still working on the same two PCs. Somewhat frustrating to have both almost healed yet knowing there are still some problems. The laptop has a dialer that just keeps showing up so it's time for more Google. Desktop is probably destined for clean install later today. Did some cooking yesterday and have a Christmas tree. House is a wreck and I have to work today. All in all, things are just about normal.

Thanksgiving is a great holiday. Just think, friends and family will assemble to eat and celebrate life. I will get to spend time with both my daughters and sons-in-law plus our real boss, Maddie. Tomorrow is not the target day though. I hope to finish several projects and will spend the day alone, God willing. I prefer it this way. Then Friday evening, Saturday and Sunday will be devoted to hanging out with everyone. Absolutely won't be control phreaky and try to dominate their time. Love 'em too much for that to happen.

Those that will travel this holiday please be careful. Traffic will be especially bad. This is not a time to be in a hurry. Reach your destination safely and watch the other drivers! Don't imbibe the refreshing alcoholic beverages and get behind the wheel. If you do, I pray to God the long arm of the law throws you under the jail! Nuff said!

Phones, piggies, prattle n such

Trying to do battle with two machines. One's a desktop I built several years ago and the other is an older laptop running PII with 128 meg o' sdram. The OS is XP Home. It's not happy. Trying to increase the memory. It also has a dialer/trojan that is hiding. It will be found. The desktop may get the Format C: salute. May have taken a power surge hit because three PCI devices have failed. Such is life.

Anyone that has tried to call on the cell please take note that it is off. It was stated here several weeks ago that the abuse of people calling and rambling on probably will prompt work to kill the phone. How many times does someone have to say don't call unless it's an emergency? Oh well, the service is probably gone and I cannot afford to replace it out of my own pocket. Guess I shoulda' just been rude and hung up, huh?

Talking about phones - attempts to make me feel guilty because my phone is busy all the time just won't work. Whenever the VistaIIIMedia cable people decide to make this area asynchronous it will release the cable modem telco uplink. Even then I will not have call waiting - despise it. And the next person that mentions my phone stays busy all the time will be disconnected. I live alone and am somewhat aware of when my phone is in use. There are email addys posted here and at southernphried. Use them.

I shoulda' known better with a PC like you

Always a feeling of accomplishment to return home safely from a road trip. Spent the day with my Mother and Brother Dan n his family. Great to see all of them. Everyone was in a good mood and I suffered very little on the outgoing trip. Traffic was minimal on the way up and I knew it would not be the same on the flipside. Well, the 'sport' drivers didn't let me down. It rained almost all the way home and near collision was rampant. Glad to be back at the beach house.

Now it's time to do battle with a machine I've had way too long. Several pieces of hardware were found defective (ahhh the power surge or lightning thangy) and some of the drivers didn't like the conversion from Win98SE to Windows 2000. It's always best to format and do a new install and this should have been my first move. Now, with large amounts of egg on my face, that's probably the order of the evening. Yes, this is my fault. I know better. Sometimes you just gotta' try creativity. Sometimes you have to use the old melon what resides on top of the body. But hey, we all make mistakes.

Just got in from early Christmas shopping. Thought there'd be no one out the weekend before Thanksgiving; was I wrong! K, I don't like what has happened to the celebration of Jesus's birthday. Call me Scrooge or whatever, but the spirit is that of money instead of good will towards women and men. If people really had good will toward their fellow humans they'd make their crumbsnatching children behave in public. Wal-mart sucks because it's a playground where all the rude children in the world come to assault the elderly and defenseless. Don't say anything to these irresponsible mothers and fathers though, it'll get you in trouble. I can testify!! Been there and done that! Doesn't work so just do what I do and go very late at night when all the little ill-mannered urchins are asleep dreaming about their next conquest of the elderly. The parents seem to think it's perfectly fine for their yardapes to stomp all over complete strangers. Manners are quickly becoming a lost art. "Thank you Mr. and Mrs. Liberal Democrat." "Thank you ACLU." You are destroying part of the American way that has helped us survive. Gosh, the return of duelling as a way of life will help!! I know it will! LOL.

I did get a lot of shopping done and survived (didn't go in that evil Wal-Mart either!). It used to be fun, but I guess that part of life is gone. Well need to go get my half-full glass. I seemed to have misplaced it momentarily....

Friday is a wonderful day. It means there are only two more days to work this week. Thursday's post was nil due to being out of town, coming in late and falling asleep. Spent the day in Starkville, MS., fighting a DSL problem that was, and is, unusual. Soon this matter will be history. Now we wait for the replacement CISCO router to arrive. The unusual part is that the bellsouth.net techs were actually helpful and friendly!! This is real frightening. It's never happened before! If my old butt hadn't been so tired this day could have started with me banging my head on the bottom of the bed! They hardly ever help and phone company falsehoods always abound.

Taking a trip Sunday. Leaving early to visit Mother and attend church services with her. Tomorrow will be spent working as will Sunday evening. Too many ailing PCs are visiting in the Beach House. Please beware of virus infections. Three of these five machines in for repair have some flavor of cybervirii. The newest strain of pinf/parite is very difficult to remove. If I ever meet the little worm that wrote this junk there will be several cans of whup-ass opened because one beating just ain't enough! Yes, I will pray for him Sunday morning and also pray that he is caught and thoroughly manhandled when taken to jail. Everyone take care and have a super Friday!

The other is a site called Chyna Moon Designs. This site has many layers and lotsa info! It is also a very kewl looking site with sounds to astound. Be sure and check out the depth here. Great goodies abound!! The writing is extraordinary and the web design is some of the best!!

Symantec is offering a rebate on their antivirus scan program, Norton's. Slashdot posted an article yesterday where some antivirus software company is offering their software to home users at no cost for one year. Grisoft's AVG antivirus scanner has been free for years and is still the program used at the Beach House. It has never failed me. I update every 3 days and scan once a day. If you just have to spend money most folks like Norton's Anti-Virus. But Great Googly Moogly!, don't get Norton's Internet Security!! It's a package that has different tools for online protection including the virus scan software and it is horrible. I've seen it wreak havoc on a network. It is extremely hard to uninstall and seems to cause more problems than all the web evils put together. Purchase JUST the antivirus program! If you are running McAfee, please don't ask me to work on your unprotected machine. Don't even bring it into my yard. How does this horrible company stay in business? Kevin Rose, TechTV guru, likes their firewall. I use ZoneAlarm; it's free and does a great job. No McAfee for me.

AVG? Click on the link listed on this site and download the free version. Be sure and give them a valid email address because they will send you a code to activate the product. When installing just use the defaults and let it finish. Be sure to restart. Let it update if needed. Let it scan. Have trusty floppies on hand and make disk/disks. Now do a few tweaks.

Find the update manager and change it from the default setting of every 14 days to no more than 3 days. While there on the Update Manager page uncheck the user confirms dial up box so it can check for updates when you are away from the computer. Then schedule AVG to run every day. Now here's the real trick. Always make sure your virus definitions are up to date. Let's say you use a laptop and it has been in the trunk all week (absolutely won't mistreat mine that way). When you finally get it out and online, go immediately to the Update Manager tab and make it manually update. Then run a full scan. If you haphazardly get on the web without doing this then your chances for infection go off the scale.

Remember having an anti-virus scan program on your computer is not worth a plug nickel if the definitions are not up to date. I don't care if you live BF, Egypt, and can only sign on at 9600k, DO THE VIRUS DEFINITIONS UPDATE! Symantec thru SARC has a wonderful site that really helps when recovering from a virus infection. These tools are powerful and are designed for power users. If you don't know what your doing seek help. Hat's off to them for making this available. They blow Grisoft (AVG) away concerning online support, but Grisoft is a European company and they do provide us with free protection. Just update those definitions in any and every case. It'll make your personal confuser happy.

Emails have arrived about backing up data. 'If not the backup that's resident in the Windows OS's then what?', seems to be the question. K, how many times am I going to say - crawl out of that cave and use Google !?!? I just looked and there are over 1,700,000 hits when you type in "back up utilities free". Please put Google in your favorites and download the registry entry that makes Google your default search engine. One small, easy to use alternate backup program can be found at Mike Lin's Page. The name of the program is RapidBackup. Mike is a student at MIT and I have mentioned him several times in the past. If you use the program a few days and like it, then go back and leave something in the tip jar on his site. MIT is not free you know, so help the dude out. Backups can save you from the dragon and I guarantee he will appear when you least expect it!

Backup dat data!!!

Well, I cancelled cooking out yesterday due to a "massive rain squall" rolling over the north Mississippi hills. The way the weather channel swami's talked we were gonna need Noah before mid-afternoon. Ubertech Jim reminded me that Lewis Black, a really funny comedian, states that the root word of meteorologist is liar, LOL. Okay it did start raining, but it was like 8:00pm. Anyway, we coulda' cooked burgers and everyone would have gone home in the rain. So rescheduling is in the works.

Southern-Phried is off to a good start. We are still tuning the site and had a minor problem yesterday, but it was quickly resolved. Due to Beagle's penchant to back up everything little data was lost.

Backing up is so important. When their personal confuser shows up with them and they are in tears saying they forgot to back up, it does not impress me much. Remember, one of the simplest ways to cure windows problems is doing a drive format and reinstall. With the advent of the NT5 kernel in windows a simple re-install is not as easy as it used to be and this is a good thing - for security reasons. So find a way to back up your critical data. Don't worry about applications or your operating system; you should have that software stored in some safe place. Buying the best hard drive you can find is the first step in backing up. Do not go for the cheapies. There is RAID, but that discussion is a post in the making. RAID is expensive and probably not necesary in the home computer situation. Some folks use tape drives (which I detest), others use CD-RW drives, and there are kits that let you back up to an external hard drive through the USB port. I use the CD-RW method and it works nicely for this network scenario. Considering the external hard drive kit though. It worked well in our bench tests and makes sense that this is a very secure way to save data. Oh yeh, if you go to purchase a tape drive DAT seems better than Travan. The tapes are less expensive, the tapes are smaller and, at least in this area, more readily available. Also, try to find a backup program other than the one resident in Windows. It sucks. Just incorporate some type of backup into your system. Check the media on occasion and verify that everything is working properly.

Have to do some stuff in the garage and then work on personal confusers the rest of the day. So I will do the breakfast/coffee dance then wade to the garage and start organizing 'stuff'. Just hope that evil smelling thing has left. You know, the other day I thought I heard it say, "Steviepoo Jobs is my daddy!"

Brother Dan and I spent many hours listening to Mr. Hendrix and others of that genre way way back when and it's just apropo to remember such long ago strange wild days that sometime seem like surreal images provoked by dreams of delusion and illusion. Dan is a musician and it just came to mind. Anyway, was able to talk to him and he was laughing about how he spent his day off working!

I did post a few minutes ago and think this will be a really neat, fun place to visit. No doubt, you can find various opinions, rants, raves, etc. spewing forth from this group, LOL.

It's back to bed for me. Have a dirty house and garage to clean and the Southern-Phried group will be here this pm for burgers n refreshing beverages. First though, another hour or two of sorely needed rack time. Yep, that's right - need my ugly rest.

I am just not worthy!

Dedication is a strange wonderful thing. People have been up until the wee hours of the morning tuning this new site. Our main architect, Beagle, had a frustrating problem last night and dropped from exhaustion and Mudslingr picked up the ball and ran with it. This type of dedication makes for wonderful results. The problem solved was critical to the actual loading and continued functioning of this site and they are troopers to the Nth degree! Thanks guys! Also, I certainly will sell no one short - EVERYBODY involved has contributed! This is a very unique group and all the individuals involved are dedicated geeks not only in mind, but with the heart as well. We actually love what we do!!!

Sorry about tirade mode. Cheesy people really irk me. The jerks at Gator are so chickensh-- they have changed their name. What a bunch of idiots. The RIAA approached some fellow nerdlings in Amory, MS, about a 30 minute drive southeast of Tupelo. They warned them to stop uploading their 4000+ library. Asswipes! This is an organization that is hell bent on resurrecting the Spanish Inquisition. If you go into the RIAA (or Gator!) board room there are probably swastikas on the walls! They should pray to Hitler and Satan every night and thank them that I probably won't be elected Ruler of the Known Universe. I'd have 'em all horsewhipped and flung into a volcano!

Somehow I have to get out of this state of mind. Guess I'll go home and try and evict that evil smelling thing that has taken up residence in the back of my garage. Stress relief for a geek...

Folks, please don't download weatherbug, precision time, that stupid calender, etc. This is all Gator propaganda and it is SPYWARE in spite of what they say! Screw the evil bastards! This is horrible stuff that is a nightmare to uninstall. This type of cyber abuse is equal to virus infections! Sneaky stuff that constantly reports activity to others so they can bombard you with ads n other barnyard material. If you have it on your PC download Spybot search and destroy and remove it. It's Alive! It's Alive!

Worked late on the new page last night. Actually, a few of us got together and watched our HTML goddess at work. There were major changes and the launch is ahead of schedule. Everything may be in place to make an official announcement this week. Sorry, but I am just geeky enough to tell you that this has been a blast. I have laughed out loud on several occasions.

While watching this thing come together I thought of how kewl it was that Mudslingr sat at another machine here doing stuff, Nookin4Nub-inthe662 sat at his crib participating and Beagle was at home orchestrating it all over a communal yahoo chat - constantly astounding us with an array of templates and colors. We have a logo now and it reflects the spirit of what this is all about - it's fun! Ubertech Jim (aka ARCIII) came later and did an awesome post, Red Dragon made some great comments and Corinth Chris (aka Grasshoppa) has been a constant supply of great info and ideas. We got Uncle Snake and Verdana signed in too.

When starting this project it seemed like a good idea to bring geeks/nerds in our area together for a general forum. Corinth Chris n I started talking about this months ago and it is great to see talented people come together and work like "robots" to make this happen. I think everyone will really like the cyberwit and cyber info. The core group is diverse in fields and some opinions. Avatars for each member are being developed and they will reflect this diversity.

We by no means are limited to our own devices. Comment bars are in place and we hope to have many people rant and rave through articles sent to us. Hey, I am so taken with all this I am actually looking for an Apple person to submit stuff. Of course, you better have thick skin to run with this Windows/FreeBSD/Linux bunch.

Gotta go, the shower beckons, n I am looking for one of those 'wonderful Mondays' the Laundry Witch has talked about in the past. Well an uneventful Monday will do...

I say there-a boy, Ima' not a chicken!

Microsoft has leaked info about their new OS for several months now. It's presently titled Longhorn. Whether or not the leaks are intentional we will probably never know for sure. There's a lot of vague articles floating around the web and great speculation as to what the dudes n dude-ettes in Redmond are doing. There is constant chatter about the release date being pushed back to late 2005 or early 2006. Then there are several frightening mentions that they may issue an interim version. Great googlymoogly! Did they not learn their lesson with Windows ME (Millenium)? The least successful operating system in the history of the company that most people love to hate was only forgiven because Windows 2000 was and is way kewl. So people quickly forgot and forgave Microsoft for ME. I do realize there are some folks that like ME. Hey, after formatting and doing a complete install, go directly to Windows update and download ALL updates. Make the floppies and NEVER count on the Restore function to work. ME ain't that bad. It's just that Windows 2000 is soooooooooo much better. Ok, back to Foghorn Longhorn.

Looks like they'll have a clock on the opening screen. Also, a function exists called sidebar that is supposed to make our life easier. There are changes in the way the file system will work. Let's see, a few of the new file system names being thrown around are WINFS and NETFS. Ubertech Jim tells me that NETFS is not a new idea, but one that has been rehashed. The work of video and audio integration is supposed to make all the gamers happy, something about 120 pixel count versus the 95 pixel count now present in XP. Server tools, i.e. ClickOnce, will make the IT/IS people happy. Along that line, it looks like Yukon will ship late next year. This is supposed to be the 'mac-daddy' (sorta funny description about a Microsoft product, huh?) of databases that will replace SQL which is pronounced sequel. Anyway, if you are jonesing for info on this latest offering do a Google search and you'll be happy. Just don't get it confused with things related to the University of Texas mascot. If you want to have some fun, search for Foghorn LEGhorn and enjoy things relevant to my second favorite Looney Tunes character. Hey, who doesn't like the world's greatest curmudgeon - Yosemite Sam!?

Can't post this without saying something about Linux. Bill Gates is smart enough to know that if he doesn't do something wonderful in a timely manner more people will dabble in Linux. He's also smarting because the world's 'biggest asshole' Steve Jobs, is reaping great financial rewards with 'wayyy too pricey legal' music downloads. So Billyboy may up the schedule and pump out the latest offering sooner than one thinks. In the meantime, it might not hurt to look at Linux Red Hat . I find something new to like about it all the time. Free BSD is still an ongoing project. It's been a victim of the flu at this house and I hope to return to this install in the near future. Ubertech Jim loves Free BSD and Corinth Chris is a huge fan of Linux. Both of these guys are core members of the new site. There will be articles on these alternative operating systems.

The new page is still being developed. My recent whinefest with the flu slowed everything down around me except the Hitler strikers being pissed because I was sick. Anyway, we are on track and small changes keep happening that make things better. The present structure is basic and hopefully the real template will be in place in the next week or so. Then we have to decide placement. After that the posts will start. Yes, we are having fun. A place for geeks of the south to air and share is just darn near a necessity. The door is always open for comments and suggestions.

I am aware of the problem with comments. They work sometimes; like right now. Never has it been said that I am Emporer of HTML. This is a work in progress and I just installed the comments tag a few weeks ago. Need to send the developer money and have a chat. Then I may be educated enough to make it work. In the meantime, if someone knows how to fix it, please email me.

Missed posting last night. Am languishing slovenly in bed trying to let the flu run it course. Dr. John said, "Rest my boy, and stay away from stress for a few days." So I am staying horizontal today. Work planned tomorrow, n it'll be taken in slow stride. I see a flu shot in my near future. Here in our corner of paradise the weather is awesome. I have the windows open and am enjoying watching the birds out of my bedroom window that faces south over the patio. Even though ailing it's great to enjoy life. Being ill sucks. The bathroom tour is getting old. Can't sleep, can't eat; right out of a Robert Palmer tune.

My ability to sit in a vertical position hasn't been great, but we have started on the new site. It'll take a few weeks to get it tuned, but I am surrounded by kewl, diverse individuals. We are busy laying the groundwork to produce a slick site that all y'all will like and talk about. The name has been decided, but let us get things a little more structured and then I'll announce it with the gusto of a hound-dawg. After reading some of the comments posted here and there we may decide to make it a comedy site instead of tech-help (a joke).

Alas, where's our Uncle Snake when we need him? (it's almost Matrix time again)

Laundry Witch sent a Yahoo IM saying that Monday can be a wonderful day. I will try to hold this thought in my feeble mind until next week. The PC that resided at the house all weekend was not happy as it returned to its desk early yesterday. It's back on my bench again. Contrary to being contrary, it is presently warm and fuzzy. I re-taught it a favorite phrase * format C: * Enjoying this helps me deal with my control phreakiness. All drivers are installed. Now we will take it down a notch and install the Satan software Word Perfect on it. No one said the zeroes n ones would always line up right.

Matrix Revolutions will air Wednesday night. Be neat to see where this ends or goes. Mudslinger, Arial, others n myself will be there. Hate that Uncle Snake and Verdana won't be here to go, but they are planning on seeing it in Baton Rouge. Watching Animatrix and it fills a lotta' gaps. Nice work too. There are 9 tales and the animation styles vary. Watched the first Matrix last night and Reloaded several times last week. If you are a geek/nerd type these movies are almost mandatory.

The RIAA mule-asses are back at it again. Stupid lawsuits flying and the 'woosie fraidy cats' giving them money. Something needs to be done about these jerks. Seems most of us endorse paying for downloads (a reasonable amount), and we can still record ANYTHING off radio or TV for free!. Here's why - radio and TV have paid the RIAA 'juice money". Without this graft and the thug charge on each music cd, thug charges on music systems (like in malls) the RIAA cannot exist!

Let's get rid of these rotten, smelly, slimy, perverted, devil worshiping, sons and daughters of those who haunt red light districts !!! Stop buying prerecorded CDs!!! Write to your favorite musician and tell them you'd love to download directly from their web site and send them the money not the RIAA! Write your Congressmen and tell them that Nazism is not tolerated! Be verbal about this and stop the persecution of innocent people!!!! Let everyone know we want to pay for music downloads, but we don't want to pay the RIAA under any circumstances!. They must cease and desist FOREVER!

Civilization does not need hitman/mafioso mentality, but okay, let's say fight fire with fire! Make dueling legal and I'll challenge everyone of the scumbags! 60s music n Star Trek philosophy

The PC that has been on the bench is still not happy and my cold may be trying to make a 3rd or 4th comeback. The Mamas and Papas had it right when singing, "Monday Monday, just can't trust that day." Really tough starting a week in maximum failure overdrive. But, you know what? There's a very good chance things will get better! LOL

Anyone have a webmail service they recommend? The mail.com people have become ridiculous. Glad I waited to upgrade otherwise their little nasty tricks might not have become apparent. Being asked is much better than being coerced (God, I despise control freaks). Such a sad thing to see a good site deteriorate. As often said here, dueling should be brought back. Anyway, a good webmail sight is needed. May end up yahooing and getting 5000 pieces of spam a day. There is a way to stop all spam there. Use filters and give all your emailers a code word to put in the subject line.

It's a great weekend weatherwise and we may not have too many of those left this year. If you haven't clicked on the links in the last article and viewed Red Dragon's latest case modification please do so at this time. This is masterful work and his attention to detail is super. We all need our place in the sun especially those geeks that sit around absorbing "RF" in front of a personal confuser.

Still running Windows 2000? Resisting the big brother gates authentication code in XP? Yet, disappointed that there is not msconfig option in Windows 2000? Hang on to your barbeque grills and secret sauce because I've got a really kewl site for you. Mlin.net is a site created and maintained by a 19 year old student at MIT. Mike Lin started this site several years ago and has some really nifty utility programs for ALL Windows users. His Start Up Control Panel is a must for those using Windows 2000. He has a Rapid Backup program that is easy to install and use. Seesaw is great if managing a PC with two processors. Startup monitor helps keep trojans, etc away. Just go to this site and take a look. N if you like something, go back n hit that tip jar! MIT isn't free.

Have to go work on a PC that needs to return to its desk early tomorrow morning. Those whom I have given my pager number, throw it away. I wasn't given the option to switch it to my name and continue the service. Seems that when I had kidneystones a few months ago and didn't answer pages this rendered its function null. Hell, I wasn't just not answering the pager, I didn't even answer the damned doorbell. Anyone that has had this malady understands. Those that haven't, hit your knees and pray prayers of gratitude because it is so painful you actually want to die. I have asked people to please not use the cell phone unless you have an emergency and now it will be gone January 1, 2004. On the same note, everyone should know that my sense of duty WILL permit calls to my home if you feel it's necessary. God knows that many problems have been resolved over the cell phone in the past years, but now they will have to wait until the evening hours. Hopefully by then the cable modem will be asynchronous and the phone line won't stay busy. I need both jobs to make ends meet and cannot afford another expense. This post may be one of those that gets one fired or in deep doodoo. Screw it, the truth is the truth n I must get to the PC mentioned above. God help us all.

Well, just when I think it's all 'figgered' out things become FUBAR. The comments tag has become another mystery in my cyber-life. It just does what it wants to do in spite of my desires and wishes. AMX DUDE! We love ya!

Standing on a hillside looking out over the Kentucky grasslands, the scene was almost picturesque. The huge white barn with the red tin roof, the farmhouse across the way and the horses grazing in a windblown pasture seemed so serene. Then the line of traffic made it's way down a narrow country road. I remember thinking that I hope someone rides a motorcycle in my funeral march as dude road by on a Harley. We had gathered to pay homage and show overwhelming love for Michael Murphy, age 14, who was taken from us abruptly on October 24, 2003. As people gathered and the service started I cried openly. His bereaved Mother and Father were experiencing an anguish none should ever know. His sister sobbed and she touched my heart in its innermost spot as she wept beside the casket. I am crying now. Huge sobbing tears. The huge mass of people at this gathering had all been touched by this young man's life. There were no dry eyes on that hillside.

Michael was a computer advocate to the 'nth' degree. I never saw this young man that he wasn't smiling and full of curiosity. This was a child that openly gave to others that needed. Truly a young person that deserved every bit of praise sung by others. For example, he once found out a dude needed headphones to game at the local Counterstrike hang out. He knew this person couldn't afford such a thing, so he went home and dug out a set and gave them to him. I heard many stories about his aiding others while in Kentucky. He was a Yahoo IM friend of mine and it was always fun to hear what he was doing with computers.

AMX, a legend in Counterstrike at such a young age. AMX was Michael's nickname when playing the game and he had many many friends across the country due to his participation in Counterstrike Clan challenges. His fellow gamers/friends gathered enmass to pay tribute. Tracy, his sister, had an AMX decal made and it was put on the Black and Silver casket that reflected the color of his computer case mod. Many things showed up in tribute, like the flower arrangement with the keyboard and mouse intergrated with beautiful red blossoms. There was a beautiful cross display from his computer clan. Pictures everywhere reflected his charismatic smile. I was so touched by a small white bear with wings of an angel that had a scarf with AMX on it. Let me tell all of you something. The group of young people that did online game playing with Michael showed up with black armbands that had AMX on them. They passed by the casket and placed their armbands on top and the tears fell like rain. Michael will never leave any of us.

Carol, I have had to stop many times while composing this to wipe away tears. Michael, the thought of this tragedy occuring on your birthday slashes my soul. You both are loving parents. Tracy, cling to great memories and embrace life. I love you all. And, dudes and dude-ettes in the Counterstrike Clan, stay l33t. These young people played a tournament with his computer there in memoriam. So apropo, their symbolic riderless horse.

I hope everyone will include their email addys, but then realization overwhelms me with the fact that a pipe dream such as this has not been in my life since the 70s. Did the RIAA buy 'mail.com'?

My email addy is cybersouth@mail.com. It's a simple, easy address. I started using this free service many years ago when it came into being as snap mail. Just a few months ago I wrote them asking about different types of accounts so I could pay and upgrade the account. Well, that won't happen. I am looking for another web mail service. Please recommend something. These people have put up their own popups, literally slowed down the page transitions and have developed a nasty attitude. Sorry, you won't get my money by making your service worse then trying to sell me that to which I've grown accustomed. So 'mail.com' is right out there with the spammers, popup jerks and dungware people. Let's see, Leo Laporte and Patrick Norton reported last night on The Screensavers that email usage is down 60%. I don't think I would punish someone that used free service thinking they'll roll over and bark like a dog. Sorta Nazi-ish, huh?

Speaking of email, several people have written concerning my trip and the post I have said will come. Please, I am working on it and need a little more time. When it's published you'll understand.

Am home from work early, LOL. It's nice to have some 'quiet time' with my machines. I've gotten emails about the new page that we are putting together. This is a work in progress and it will be several weeks before all the "like minds" congeal and actually start entries. I am sure everyone has their HTML hats on and developing material. Everyone will be notified. Thanks for the interest. This page is simply my own personal ramblings and observations. The new one will be polished and have many features. Trip well traveled

Am back in Mississippi. Drove over 500 miles in the last 32 hours and have been in 4 different states today (took a wrong turn and spent about 5 minutes in Illinois, LOL). Kentucky, Tennessee and Illinois are pretty states, but it feels good to be back at the Beach House. Met some really nice people while gone and my faith in today's youth is way over on the positive side of the registry. More on that later.

Arial sent me a link to an article that does my heart good. Doom on Xupiter! It's about two teenage dudes that are going after the Xupiter jerks. If you have had experience with this horrible piece of spyware then I feel sorry for you. It is hard to vanquish, but it can be done. Everyone should read this article. It makes me proud of today's youth and drives me mad thinking that assholes like the Yomtobians exist.

Also on that subject - Hey Scott! Gator is spyware! Gator is spyware! Gator is spyware! Gator is dungware!! It's hard to believe that these mule-ass idiots are suing someone because they were called spyware. Well, it is spyware/adware/dungware and these people need to be punished in the deepest realms of hell. They reached an out of court settlement with someone that listed all their 'Xupiter-like' junk as spyware. What has happened to our legal system? A few months ago my insurance company settled with a lady that made a left turn in front of me and hit my truck while driving the wrong way on my side of the road!!!!!!!!!! What complete jerks. Instead of taking her to court (we had two eyewitnesses!) it cost the insurance sissies less to settle with her instead of paying lawyers. Justice in this country? You tell me.....

The past evening was spent discussing an interesting idea. Several of the techs/geeks/nerds in this area are willing to participate in a mutual page. We will have someone that specializes in windows problems, someone that builds cases, a tech that knows Free BSD, so on and so forth. This will be a tech help site with southern style. I will keep everyone posted as it matures. Like minds in numbers, cyber southern style, wow what a concept. Downright frightening! If you have been to slashdot then you know the drill. They are open source oriented where most of our content will be windows stuff with some open source. Corinth Chris n I are loving Linux, but we need more experience before we can advise. This will come. Arial, Mudslinger, Red Dragon, Ubertech Jim, Corinth Chris and myself are onboard. We are looking for participation. Good ideas are needed and the group is open to any suggestions. And you don't have to be southern, LOL. Let me know what you think. This site, Cybersouth, will remain as long as people keep reading. Several people emailed and asked about the post yesterday. Well, the same person was back at 9:24PM last night. Someone from Poland was here at 4:48AM and best I recollect, seems that I don't know anyone that lives in Poland. Cybersouth got hit one time before but the takeover was very brief. May be the same, who knows? Gulli.com is a hacking group out of east europe. The 1337 stands for leet which means elite in haxor, and is a term gleaned from a movie about hackers made several years ago. K, worse case scenario. These jerks grab the page. They may have a hard time finding the alternate page I have in place. So, I will simply email everyone with the new addy. Life shall continue. My paranoia springs from being a channel operator on IRC EFNET since 1995. We were forever "taken over" and the script kittys/kiddys finally tired and went away. There, we were able to use some defensive measures. Here we are at the mercy of the blogger/google people. And you can't expect them to stop everything just because some asshole messes with a blog. This may have happened due to listing the addy on Microsoft's Community Group when researching the service pack 4 problem. Anyway, it's a minor annoyance. I have all backed up and can move in just a few minutes. Thanks for the concern though. It's nice to know there are good folks out there. BTW, if I don't have your email address, please send it.

This may be the best radio station on the planet. Love the Mornin' Crew and really like Drake & Zeke during the afternoons. These people are crazy and will say anything. Free download sites n a GOTCHA!

Some folks have expressed concerned about the "flamers" that email me. Please, these people are not a problem. For instance, right now there is a strange aol user that has been spending long periods in here for the last week. This may be harmless and I encourage everyone to read the archives. But, I do note anomalies. Another takeover of this page is undesirable. If it happens, so be it. I will get it back.

The flamer mentioned yesterday has been fingered simply by identifying his ISP. It didn't take much research to find Mr. Anonymous. Since I know the person there are certainly no worries about him. L33t he ain't. His ability to babble isn't even substandard.

Austin and I were talking about good places to find free downloads. TUCOWS and CNET are excellent sites that have been around for many years. They offer freeware and shareware. Both have a ratings systems that are very helpful. I realize that there are many more great download sites and would love to hear from ya' with suggestions. Seems we are all interested in such pages. LOL. Austin is needing a way to transfer files that may be several gigs. He's doing intense video editing. Any ideas? Anybody a DC++ guru?

Time for work. My corner of paradise is getting mo' betta'. Gosh, the cold is now at an almost livable level. Anyway, symbiosis still sucks! As does the RIAA.

Great Google Moogle!

Windows Critical Updates, how is this done? - asks Terry from Ingmar. Go to Start (bottom left corner of screen) left click, scroll up to Windows Update, left click, let the page open (btw you have to be on the internet) any window that pops open say yes to it (don't tell Microsoft you trust them - don't check the box), click the SCAN button, and download the critical updates. Since there has been a problem downloading SP4 (service pack 4) in Windows 2000 I advise downloading 1, or 2, or 3 then 4 instead of downloading SP4 and bypassing the first ones even though they tell you you can do this. Also, if you click an update that is starred/asterisked, it has to download by itself. Let it, then come back and do the rest (there are several of these starred downloads). If you are using a dialup modem these updates will take time and your machine will slow to a crawl if you do not have a lotta' RAM. Sorry, but don' let this stop you from getting your PC up to date! Now this is really important - restart the machine every time it tells you to restart. Do I need to repeat? Okay. If you try to stick more downloads in there without restarting you WILL have problems. There are other downloads too. Read the "more" about these to see if you really need them. Also make sure you PC has the minimum specifications to utilize the download. For instance, my lowly 200mmx does not need the new media player stuff because it's not fast enough to use it. Google search about Windows Critical Updates and read about it. I endorse these updates because of security issues and security issues only. My healthy paranoia always makes me a bit skeptical of the Microsoft bunch. I still somewhat dislike XP because of that authorization junk . If you run a spybot or spy sweeper type program it will amaze you as to how many Microsoft based utilities are trying to report things behind the scenes. Right big brotherish. FYI, Linux Red Hat does not do such things.

The anonymous emailer strikes again. Yes, I do recommend products made by people I know. Let's see ... my page, my thoughts, my right to say what I want to say. The Seat Company is way kewl. When going there I usually stop at the West End Deli and eat some awesome food with the Parker gang. Don't come to this house bringing other than Earthgrains/Colonial Bread products. My good friend David manages this area for them. No case mods here unless Red Dragon does them. If I ever have another cat it will be a Norwegian Forest Cat because Ubertech Jim raises them. If you can't use Thomas Electronics I recommend Red Magnet - my daughter works for them. I consult Chyna Moon on web development. Corinth Chris is the tech that should work on your machine in Alcorn County and surrounding areas. Google Rocks! This can go on and on. Yes, I do recommend people I know that are good at their respective fields. I also will tell you what I think of things I don't like, like that overpriced/slowass apple computer you are probably using to try and harass me. Also, anonymous - I do reply to all emails, one way or another.

Not too long ago I needed a chair. After much looking and up/down motion, I have one. It is overstuffed, built like a Sherman tank, gorgeous and wayyyy comfortable. It is made locally by some mastercraftsmen. The Seat Company is located in Pontotoc, MS. That's about 15-20 minutes due west of Tupelo, MS. Rusty, Steve, Joe and the team make beautifiul furniture with the utmost precision and material. Imagine sitting on a cloud. At the end of a workday I am ready to drop into this wonderful piece of furniture, armed with my remote and watch The Screensavers on TechTV. This is a weekday ritual and it is joyous I tell ya'! I opted for cloth and it matches my decor perfectly. Another neat thing about The Seat Company is that you can order online and at wholesale prices. They specialize in leather and it's really awesome. These folks know their business and are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. Does this sound like a commercial? Hey, they are friends of mine. They do great work! Go to the site and look around. Their web page is straghtforward, easy to navigate and is most informative. There's a permalink posted. Check 'em out!

I am still downloading the current critical updates (my XP and 2000 machines are done) and have had no problems so far. I think they are relatively safe. Protect your PC. Update your virus definitions too. And don't open emails that you know nothing about! Real good chance they have virus infections. Just delete them and stay safe.

Guess what's new? Microsoft has more critical updates!!!

Like my friend Eddie said, they are averaging over one a week. Red Dragon let me know yesterday, but I had posted early and went home to the throes of cold misery. Anyway, thanks RD, n keep hacking away at that visual basic stuff. Tom says wait on the updates until the bugs are worked out. I used to agree, but with security being such an issue I will go home and download these little jewels to all my windows PCs. I recommend everyone do the same. Don't know about you folks but my email is lambasted daily with virus bombs. I'd rather reinstall knowing I was trying to protect my machines than to have these dirty bastards infect it and be the reason for reload. Please remember to update your AVG or Norton's, etc. every few days. I am checking daily. Once again, if you are using McAfees, don't worry with updating. It won't do any good. McAfee's blows, but not nearly as bad as the cretins at RIAA.

It has been brought to my attention that the sitemeter is doing weird things. I am working on it. If you hit the page and only get the first few posts, do a refresh or two and it should give you a 'week's worth'. Please bear with me, it'll either work right or be removed. Since the cold/flu/biological virus seems to be slacking up I will probably die today or at least go comatose. This has been going on for a month. I just want to get well and go get a flu shot!! Always heard when you age it's harder to shake off illness and that may be one of my life's great understatements. God had blessed me with good health until 1997/1998 when I agonized for 9 months wondering if I would be shortly terminated due to cancer. It didn't happen and I am proud to say that I still get good reports every few months after finding the right medical people, but that's another story. I never had colds, back problems, gastro malady, etc., until the last few years. It's been a constant battle experiencing one problem after another. I've torn muscles that need repairing and do not exercise much. Diet is not what it should be and weight needs to be lost. So something has to give because a late lifetime of drifting from one illness to another does not fit into my planned agenda! BTW, The comatose/death remark is a joke (I hope).

Google search will find many sites that pertain to medical stuff. WEBMD is a good place to start. I've mentioned this site before and always start there when seeking cyber-medical babble. Of course the internet is a hypochondriac's dreamscape. Please beware of any information and GO SEE A DOCTOR. Find a doctor you trust and one that talks to you like a human being. If they take that superior attitude, beware. At the same time if they start out a conversation with 'Hydee bubba, you ain't gonna believe this sh--', beware. This is not rocket science. Common sense always helps. Most medical people are human beings, but this field also has it's share of horses' asses. Anyway take advice from one who knows, seek medical help. Get flu shots if needed. Be nice to them and pay your bills in a timely fashion. After all, they have influence over one of your most precious mortal items.

Also, laugh. Laugh and seek humor. Going through life and not having fun is about as dumb as it gets. Period. Nuff said. (Cough, cough) Peace out!

When the service pack 4 problem was encountered last week I went to Microsoft's online "board" as well as two others to seek aid in the resolution of the problem. Like a dumbass I used this email addy and am now being spammed by the jerks that wrote the SWEN virus. Again, don't open these attachments. Newest slant is a letter from some faux email administrator type with an attachment. When you see strange emails just delete them. I am not one to endorse or study the 'dark one', but I bet Satan has a special place by the fire reserved for these virus writing jerks.

Work yesterday was good. We accomplished a lot. Then I came home and vegetated. My garage is still a wreck and I am going to try and oust whatever is living back there behind the boxes in the southwest corner. But, I plopped my tired butt down and watched The Dance by Fleetwood Mac. They are all older, more talented and very gracious to their audience. I love Christine McVie, she can sing with great range and feeling. But Stevie Nicks is just knockdown, dragout, tongue steppin' gorgeous! Extremely sensual and mysterious! This DVD has many close ups and it's hard to believe she's even aged since the Rumours album of 20 something years ago. Ms Nicks writes awesome tunes and interprets them with great feeling. She can twirl and spin in my presence any time she gets ready. Also dedicated a song to her Dad and that goes a long way with me. Stevie's Page aka Nicksfix They are all talented, every one of 'em. But Stevie floats the boat for me. Heckuva lots prettier than Mick, Lindsay or John! They are an unusual, eclectic group. In a genre all their own. Stevie, email me!

Frank from Alabama wants to know about Mozilla. Do I use it? Is it better than IE6? Will it work with Outlook Express? First, let me tell you don't try to uninstall IE6. If you are using an older version of Internet Explorer go to Windows Update and get IE6. Also, do all the pertinent updates. Now, with IE6 done let me answer the questions. Mozilla is an alternative browser. It is a reincarnation of the last version of Netscape with some neat changes. One nice thing - it doesn't belong to AOL (Netscape did or does or whatever) which is beyond any doubt the WORST internet provider on the planet. If that offends you take your 'training wheels' browser and go elsewhere. If you like AOL so much you really don't need to be here. AOL sucks, not quite as much as the RIAA but they are really bad. Ahem! Distracted there for a moment...let me return to the subject. Mozilla is an open source browser that has gone through several states of improvement. It is the resident browser in most flavors of Linux. I use it on my Linux Red Hat machine and love it. It reacts in different ways than IE6 reacts, can kill most pop ups, and KMail (a part of the KDE shell) is an email browser that bascially eliminates virus infection. I am sure this will change as Linux becomes mainstream in the home arena. Is it better than IE6? Well, it's different. I still use IE6 on my 'big' windows machine, but love to go to the Linux box and surf the web too. It will work with Outlook Express. You can switch back and forth between both browsers. Remember, if you download this and fubar you system, don't whine around here. It's your machine, not mine and I didn't install any application on your PC. You did. So here's the Link: MOZILLA . My favorite RM tech sent me this little diddy and I am still ROFL -- The Duel. You have to have Macromedia Flash (it's a free download at their site and you need it if you don't have it) and it helps to be a Southerner to really appreciate the 'deeply buried nuances'. The Service Pack 4 problem from Tuesday has been met and it has taken a severe beating. If anyone runs into this problem let me know - I have the 'fix'. Beware the 4th of Service Pack

There are two new critical updates for windows 2000. Guess this is just an ongoing process for the boyz n girlz at Mircosmooze. Gee, Mr. Gates, can I have a job coding? As my friend Eddie pointed out this is averaging over 1 per week so far this year. Presently, there are messages all over the forums, boards n such about the trials and tribulations of installing SP4 on Windows 2000. DON'T DO IT! At least not now. Yesterday I sat happily doing my geek thing updating a machine and it is still on the bench. Don't bother posting to Computing.net, Microsoft or Annoyances.org. I've had inquiries at these sites since this morning. Will keep you posted. Never had a problem with service pack 4 until yesterday. This is a true geek's nightmare. Some 'rocket scientist' at Microsoft decided to play with SP4 and people from all over are howling. Great googly moogly what's a nerd to do?

I have installed the two new updates on a machine that has all the updates including SP4 and it is functioning just fine. Folks, these updates are called critical for a reason. But hey, if you are not updating your virus definitions then don't bother. These "critical" updates, for the most part, are addressing security issues and are as important as virus definitions. Please stay tuned and the outcome of the latest FUBAR at the winders factory will be posted. If anyone has any input my email address is about as simple as it gets; cybersouth@mail.com. Popups need to Popout

Popups bothering you? Annoyed to no end with undesired advertising? I have two recommendations: POW from AnalogX and the Google Tool Bar. Links are listed to both.

Google News will take you to all things Google - just change the tab at the top. And people, if you are not using Google as your search engine, at least install the registry edit that will make it your default search engine. Leo Laporte, on Call for Help, which airs on TechTV, highly recommends the toolbar. It has a built in pop up killer and from discussion with fellow geeks n nerds that are using it, it seems like a real nifty browser enhancement. Things Google seem good in general. I will install this on my 200mmx windows 98 machine and report at a later date.

POW from AnalogX sits in the sys tray and you can add popups and popunders as they appear. I have had 100% positive input about this wonderful tool. This is more traditional and comes from a site that has been in existence since 1998. Mark Thompson writes lotsa free downloads for many things cyber. This particular application resides under the software/networking category. Look around this site. It helps us lowly geek/nerd types understand how a major geek/nerd does things in a positive way. This is a site that started out as a super site and has steadily improved through the years. Keep up the good work, Mark!

I mowed, cleaned out the refrigerator, cleaned house, spent time with my favorite grocer and enjoyed seeing friends. Not everyone showed up, but that's okay. The weather can't get much better and we made use of the swing and hammock, which was and is a big hit. Thanks brother Dave for the buns.

Today I finish mowing. Also must rake under the Magnolia tree. Cleaning out the garage is a project that must be started, but it won't be finished today. Then it's back to the bench to see if I can finally get the FreeBSD PC running. Looking forward to it. May post later. Of late this has been more personal and not so tech-ie, but it helps my spirit. Stress has been trying to consume me and it helps to talk, even if it is to cyberspace. I will return to cyber-techno format in the near future. As I took that thing from the fridge to the garage, also had a load of clothes. Will the clothes be worn tomorrow? Depends on the thing that lives in the southwest corner of my garage. No matter, hawaiian shirts are the casual dress of the day. N 'cheeseburgers in paradise' will rule. Here's hope someone will not drug me and make my reality reality. Time management and undesired pets

The weather is awesome. Very cool nights and mild days. After mowing the yard and cleaning house, hamburgers and refreshing beverages are in order. That should happen tomorrow afternoon with some luck. Sometimes you just have to stop and enjoy the company of friends. Sometimes hiding from the world is a great thing. Catching up on reading, finishing a tech project, cleaning out the sock drawer all seem to come easier if a day is planned where one can be alone.

It's early, sleep is not easy and the laundry calls. Seems the refrigerator had grumblings the last time it was opened, so I may try to capture whatever resides on that bottom shelf and banish it to the trash can. Or give it to the mysterious creature that resides in the far back corner of my garage.

Hot rods n sleep not a good mix

It's after 6:30PM. I just jumped on some kids about squealing tires. I was sleeping. And I've turned into the grouchy old man that lives on the corner. I really don't mind if they squeal tires, just don't wake me. I really feel old........and tired. I am going back to sleep.

The weather turns gorgeous and I catch a cold. Just can't seem to shake it and feel miserable. Bones ache, the nose thinks it's in a relay race and people are treating me like a sensitive guy because my eyes appear to be tearful. I won't even go to what my stomach is about, duh! One malady after another. I've a riding lawn mower sitting in my garage and haven't used it! This cold business has to stop! Now! Non-use of a riding mower is a criminal offense at the Saltillo Beach House!

Susan wrote saying that when downloading MSN Messenger that she receives an error message - Command line option syntax error. C'mon you closet geeks. Come forth and help this lady out! In the words of Red Green, "We're all in this together."
