Load 'Em Up and Shoot Boys!

There was a character back many years ago that did goofy commercials on local TV channels named Montego Mike. For the most part they centered around the home satellite antenna craze back when "C" band was popular, aka big dishes. He threw TVs off the store roof, shot one with a pistol, had a group of "outlaws" assemble and shoot into a large stack of old TVs, and had a mean parrot and a bulldog that showed up on occasion. He wore a large black cowboy hat, a long black coat, and always had on sunglasses. His children were embarrassed to tell their friends he was their Dad and a lot of people thought he was on drugs. He wasn't on drugs although I heard he would rip the cap off a Jack Daniels bottle and throw it away. It's rumored he previously lived through some purple haze years after his two tours of Vietnam. I think there was a total of 27 or 28 different ads concerning this character. He even did a few commercials for a local coffee shop now out of business (yes, it's appropriate). Due to someone erasing the last existing copy of these horrible productions there is, happily, no record of these silly, downright stupid ads. No doubt his listening to the song posted yesterday had something to do with the name. He had visited there and thought it was a small corner of paradise on earth. In conclusion, it is fortunate that no copies of this foolishness exist. Hope this satisfies the discussion that can be found in yesterday's comments.

Wow, Great OBG

This is from 1970. Bobby Bloom sang it and I bet you had no idea he had such a great Afro haircut. This song has been around a while and chances are you've heard it. Sadly, Mr. Bloom was killed in a shooting accident at the age of 28 in 1974. This tune is a great legacy. Check it out:

Like that haircut? Pretty cool for 1970, huh?

He Had No Failure to Communicate

One of the great actors passed away. Paul Newmnan left us at age 83. He was well liked by his hometown friends and neighbors which is reflected in an article over at People.com. His salad dressings are still seen around the beach house on occasion. He leaves behind a list of charity works that should impress St. Peter at the gate for sure. He was legendary for staying focused on his marriage to his wife Joanne Woodward. I know she will miss him.

Never will I forget seeing Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid the first time. It was playing at the Malco Theater in Memphis back when Memphis was still a safe, clean city. The Malco has since been restored and is now the Orpheum Theater. It was a first date for me. We sat in the balcony. Good Lord she was gorgeous. Later in life she gave birth to two beautiful daughters that get their gorgeous looks from her. You can tell, when you see their Dad. Her name later became Mrs. West. I was in love deeply that very night, but it didn't distract from watching a great, great film. But, things change. She's certainly happier now being the ex and I am too.

Here's a clip from a great Paul Newman Movie:

He has made so many great movies they are too numerous to list. Besides Butch and Sundance and Nobody's Fool beachhouse favs are The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (it's hilarious!), Hud, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, and his Oscar winning Cool Hand Luke. As a matter of fact Nobody's Fool is one of my all time favorite films. Mr. Newman was truly larger than life. His achievements as a humanitarian first and then actor are awesome. And we had one thing in particular in common, fast cars. Didn't know him personally and didn't always agree with him politically. Yet, something inside tells me he led a happy life. He always seemed up tempo. No doubt he'll be missed.

Charlotte: How can you live in a town this size and not see your ex-wife all the time?
Sully: That's easy, dolly. Peter's mom and I don't exactly travel in the same circles. As a matter of fact, Vera pretty much travels in a straight line.

Peter: It's not gonna be easy being you, is it?
Sully: Don't expect much from yourself in the beginning. I couldn't do everything at first, either.

Eyes Wide Shut?

Fell asleep and missed the debate. It is important to see it so a personal opinion can be formed. The news media is so prejudice you can NEVER seek the truth in any of the forms used that permit this drivel to drip into our lives. Screw NBC, ABC and PBS. Hey, I can be biased too. For instance: I am beginning to really dislike this Obama guy. Immensely. And his cast of idiots that surround him are dumbasses. What a pompous bastard! Our country is in truly sad shape when someone of his caliber can even run for office period. He formative years years are spent in a radical Muslim school in Jakarta learning all the hate rhetoric and then he attended a church (for over 20 years!) led by the United States #1 racist Jeremiah Wright. This is a man that has constantly said God damn America from the pulpit. Yep, that's a great background for the leader of our nation...NOT!!!!!

So, I will try to find a recording of the debate and decide if Jim Lehrer was a good moderator. It'll also be interesting to determine if the debate questions were from a script. I am still not a great fan of McCain's politics in general, but he is one helluva site better than Obama, hands down. You don't agree? It's your right, but do me a favor. If you are an Obama supporter don't visit here again. It makes me feel dirty just thinking about it.

Games People Play and Other Things

Rather short post yesterday. The day started early and my server problem that I've fought is over. I spent several hours during the night sometime around the very witching hour discovering why the circa 2000 DOS software would not let Vista print to screen or device. That client machine is now printing to both. Wow, what a nightmare. Can we say perseverance? Can we say gusto of a pit bull? Spent wayyyyyy too much time rebuilding this network only to have them purchase a server from someone else. Hey, building servers is one of my specialties. There are many across North Mississippi built at the beach house and they are tough, durable machines. Oh well, what cha gonna do? Can't win them all. They didn't even ask me and I retrieved their data and brought a SCSI XEON server back online running better than ever. Enough of this whine, really not that important.

Am building a gaming machine that will be for sale in a few weeks. It will definitely be able to MMORPG (Massively Multiple Online Role Playing Game). Can we say kick ass? Oh yeah. Visiting in the realm of the 3 continents is great, great fun. That's my oldest daughter in the picture alongside my mainmost character, Maskull Tor. She's an Air Elementalist and is capable of opening up a huge tin of whupass. Her character's name is Cyndane Eloize. Wish we had more time to play. I am old, tired and a lardass. She's pregnant. Enough! Back to the machine presently being built. The price wil be fair, but don't expect a Wal-Mart type price. WallyWorld does not sell anything close to the power of uber that will be found in this machine. This is a "spec" machine, but let me know if you have certain needs and it can be tailored to suit you. Oh yes, it will be dual core Opteron based. Nuff said?

Gosh folks, enjoy the weekend. Weather here is beautiful. Think I'll try and catch up on badly needed rest and sleep. Later.

On the Return to the Usual Sub-normal State

Mixed news for TeamSpeak users. The server is online again. It will be up and down over the next few days as changes are implemented. The down time should be during off hours and not interfere with peak usage times. I know this is frustrating, but it's necessary for security and an improvement in speed. We have more users and this is good, but safeguarding the service is important enough now certain protocols have to be put in place. In the meantime please check out TeamSpeak 3. This is not just another phase of improving the existing architecture, but a complete rewrite in C++. Isn't the march of technology a wonderful thangy?

The recent nightmare of resolving problems with a failing server has preoccupied the minds that revolve around the beachhouse. It has consumed me to a great degree. Resolution appears close at hand so I will get back to a sub-normal schedule soon. My promise to everyone is the next time such a challenge will not be undertaken. New equipment will be the recommendation. Please put up with my tardiness. Health issues haven't helped much either. Efforts are being made to contact everyone and let them know my normal reliability level will return. Thanks to everyone that has been gracious and understanding. Y'all are precious. Not many folks know the meaning of the word gracious nowadays. Thanks to all my fellow techs and friends for their help with the client's server problem.

The Importance of Backing Up

The server job is now 50% over. Half the PCs will not perform some of the functions in the proprietary software. Changes in the server have drastically improved network speed and stability. Except for the one problem with proprietary software all other functions are fine. There were no backup disks. Heck there were no disks period. Thank the Good Lord we'd performed a backup on a USB drive a few days before it failed. Almost there. So close. Hopefully I'll finish tomorrow night.

Please, please perform a daily backup. If you are using a tape backup stick a sandwich or something in it and never use it again. Large capacity USB external hard drives are inexpensive and most come with backup software. The resident backup program in Windows works too. Be sure and purchase two of the USB drives. You can change them every day and always have a current backup off premise. They are small and easily fit in a purse or shirt pocket. Think about it. What if, God forbid, a tornado strikes your business. Or fire?

It's late. Time to sleep.

Steven Bocho and Neil Patrick Harris Moment

Have been "under the weather" for a few days, but life is returning to its subnormal routine. After fighting a bear of a server problem it was finished in good shape with the introduction of a new SCSI adapter. This one has been tough. Glad it's over. Looking forward to a full day tomorrow. Life is much nicer when positive results are produced. K, going to go now...sounding too much like Doogie Howser.

Did You Know That Stress Kills?

I had a post here that was very negative and pushed up to this site in haste. It has been saved and I'd still like my tech friends to review it. Ashby, I also saved your great comment. After talking to several friends it has been decided to sleep on it and take no action until tomorrow. Those that know me have an idea about the content.

Changes Good? Hope So

I am happy to report that my VA medical care has been moved from Smithville to Tupelo. That almost 100 mile round trip of several hours is now reduced to a 30 minute round trip. I will certainly miss many people since I attended this clinic for two years paying my own way before being granted VA privileges. It's nice to know that some things are being done to help Veterans. After some investigation it is apparent the government pays a handsome price to the individuals that are providing care for Veterans. Nothing is worse than being treated like a piece of meat. Fellow Veterans, don't let them mistreat you. Stand up for your rights. You did the time in the service for your country.

Now if they will close down that horrible facility known as the VA Hospital Memphis. Build it in any other city and DON'T hire anyone that worked at the one in Memphis. These are the most hateful people on earth. This building may be an above the ground extension of hell. Why do they have people from Mississippi going to that nasty, crime ridden, smelly city anyway? When is the psychotic population of that area going to stop electing goofball Willie Herrington Mayor? They all need mental health care. Besides, it makes sense that Mississippians should be sent to the VAH Jackson, MS.

Enough. I hope to NEVER set foot in Memphis, TN, again. Must go take evening blood pressure meds. Later.

Beachhouse Battle Simulation

Okay I stole this from KimKomando's site. Her site link is at the bottom of the page. This looks like my typical day with the server I've been fighting, but we had a breakthrough early this morning and that situation is recoverable. My scheduled doctors appointment today was interesting. Will talk more about that later. Click on this video and enjoy a great laugh!!

AVG Still Rocks

It's Tuesday! That means Monday is not due for six more days! Whew! Glad yesterday is over and will probably feel the same way tomorrow about today. Time marches on. Tomorrow I have an appointment with the doctor. I have white coast syndrome. They bother me so my anxiety is heightened. Oh well, try not to worry too much and see what tomorrow brings, huh?

There's much talk about the newest free edition of AVG Anti-Virus. Version 8 is using more resources and the scans are taking 3 to 4 hours instead of the 45-50 minutes to which we've grown accustomed. There has been a problem updating downloads, but that seems better. The same problem was encountered when they had a major version upgrade from 6 to 7. The definitions downloads, I mean. I am sticking with it. Hopefully they will reduce the scan time and the definitions should become easier to download. Take a look over at HowtoGeek for a more thorough article on this subject. You can download the AVG 8 Free Edition there too. Read the comments for more hands on info.. This is a great site and the Geekster is usually right on the money about things in nerdworld.

What beautiful weather at the beach house. I'll be tied to the bench trying to revive a badly needed server that should have been back online last week! Complications, complications. If I wasn't crazy I'd go insane. Later.

Must Hurry Up to Hurry Up

Thank goodness my sitemeter has returned to normal. It's located in the very bottom left corner of the post. Don't know if my negative comment made a difference, but just glad it is back to normal.

Today will be a long day. Many projects scheduled and Mondays have a habit of getting sideways. Starting with a lack of sleep is never good. Sometimes you just gotta fight the bear.

Time is wasting and diligence is coming slowly. Everyone have a good day and remember, Monday is almost halfway over! Later.

Not Fallen, but Risen

The service for my friend Myles was yesterday. His family had a Patriot Honor Guard escort them to the Memorial. They opened the service with the song Sentimental Journey, one of Myles favorites. Then there were various readings from the Bible plus a short sermon from the pastor. I am utterly humbled that Deb's brother, John, read my post from this past Thursday at the service. What an honor. Thanks Deb. Thanks John.

I've spent a lot of time in reflection and it ranges from laughter to tears. His sense of humor was tremendous. He enjoyed laughing at all the funny things in life. He liked the TV show MASH a lot. Think it had to do with his love of things military. Just before our last visit he sent me the ball cap pictured here. His wit was quick and he found positive aspects of most everything. This man was a genuine good guy. He was a tremendous patriot, loving husband and a good friend. And you know what? He smiled. A lot.

Remembered one time (a long time ago in galaxy far, far away) we'd gone to a friend's house and it was snowing like crazy. Please remember this was in my purple haze years. Myles really didn't go through all that. My brother was there and said it'd be a nice day to water ski. Everyone laughed. Then Ricky Joe Ballard said he'd gas up the boat and we'd all go to the Mississippi River if brother Dan would ski. Please bear in mind brother Dan didn't even go to Vietnam and he had purple haze years extraordinaire for a while. He grew out of it and has become quite successful in life with a great wife and 3 adult children. You wouldn't have thought things would have turned out that way on that cold, snowy day. Brother Dan the Wild Man is now known as Daddy Dan. He is a very sober Christian family man and has been for many, many years. Back to the tale at hand.

We launched the boat. It was cold, colder than a well digger's butt. Said man with a shovel could have climbed up to the top of his project and see polar bears on the horizon that particular day. The idea was that Dan would take off from the shore. He! He! He! Ha! Ha! Ha! He did not wear a wet suit. We all agreed Ricky Joe would get him up on the slalom ski and then slow down mid river and let him sink. Can you imagine a large ski boat with six people rolling around on the floor laughing our butts off? When we finally picked him up he was red as a stop sign and wanted to be mad. But he busted out in laughter too. I remember that Myles was laughing so hard there were tears in his eyes. He immediately took a liking to my brother that day. He always asked about him when we talked.

Myles had many friends. Most I did not know because of the distance between us. I did know a few. He was active with the Commemorative Air Force aka Confederate Air Force. They fly vintage airplanes and have many machines for display at various shows and museums. Myles pride and joy was a Vietnam era Duster. There is a very similar one pictured in my last post about him. His friends in the CAF High Sky Wing honored him with a missing man formation during the service. You can see it here:

CAF MISSING MAN FLY OVER FOR MYLES MAGNESS

I shall really miss him. He helped me overcome problems when shadows of Vietnam would creep back into my life. He helped me become stronger and influenced my constant pursuit of optimism. Folks, a super fellow has crossed the bar. I shall really really miss him.

Scroll Up for the SpeedTest Link Too!

As requested the Speedtest permalink now resides at the top and bottom of the page. Yes, that is a long way to scroll down. Hope everyone is enjoying a nice day. It was actually pleasant to take time out and mow the yard for a few hours. The neighbors drive by laughing and pointing when I am on my YardBug riding mower. The common nickname around the area is 'Elephant on Turtle', since the mower is green like a turtle and I am, well, a lardass. Now it's back to the grind. Have a workstation and a server to repair plus a great friend is droppping by to do some work on his gaming machine. It's an awesome SLI machine with all the heavy hardware. Hope Windows Update site is in a good mood today. Sometimes their voodoo is hard to download. You can thank that jerk Steve Ballmer for this annoyance!

You may notice that Sitemeter has changed and another source for counts may be sought. Their website and configuration might as well be written in another language. Many good years with a really nice counter then somebody buys it and makes it difficult so you will pay them money. It's the way of the internet. Greed is such a nasty, dirty thing. Later.

Scroll Down for the SpeedTest Link

If you will scroll down to the very bottom of the page there is a new permalink to SpeedTest.net. Any time you want to check your connection speed just click on the link and follow simple directions. If you are in the local area ignore their recommendations and check your speed to Atlanta, GA. Most traffic in this area is routed through that area. Be sure and check the ping results, it gives you an idea about how fast you communicated with the area chosen. This is a handy site and making it permanent on Cybersouth will give you a quick link. Besides, you might come here more often, lol. Oh this is soooo exciting, I must say! Tell your friends! Tell your neighbors! Tell your grocer! Tell the mailman! Tell the dog! Wait...maybe not the dog.

The World Is Not the Same

I am alone. And very very sad. Out of all my Vietnam friends that stayed in touch down through the years Myles K. Magness was the next to last to survive. Now there is one - me. Myles and I spent an afternoon together a month or so ago and he was in tremendous spirits. He was laughing and we talked about the future. He was looking forward to a retirement consisting of a very well planned life of leisure. He was a hard worker all his life. He had recently retired from FedEx and counted Fred Smith as a personal friend. He is survived by his wonderful wife, Deb. Let me say something my friends; if every wife could be like Deb the world would be a far far better place. She has the right stuff.

Myles stayed in touch ever since our return from the land of purple haze and agent orange. Our conversations were upbeat most of the time and there was a lot of laughing. He was so in love with Deb. This I admired so much. Two wonderful people traveling through life and being a real couple. True love. Gosh it was a joy and a privilege to see them together. It breaks my heart that I cannot be in West Texas to at least offer aid and support. She never complained about Myles habit of reading constantly. His level of intelligence was off the scale. I have been influenced by his massive knowledge and strength of character. He had no enemies. This can go on and on.

Must go finish the shedding of tears and experience the inevitable grief. He will be missed by so many people. Thank the Good Lord he passed away in his sleep. I know he was at peace. Prayers out for Deb and everyone whose life he has touched. I loved him like a brother. Still do.

A Decision

A bittersweet decision was made earlier today. I have pounded my head against a workbench trying to recover a large inventory data file with negative results. In the middle of preparing a synopsis of the situation to send to a company located in Florida, to see if they would try an intense attempt at data recovery, a phone call was received. It was the client saying that further pursuit was not necessary. Seems their inventory was essentially out of date and needed to be reworked. Since we had a circa 1999 DOS program (it was updated in 2002) running on an XP network the decision to upgrade the software was made over a month ago. In all honesty my hope of another company being able to resolve the problem was minimal at best. The files were just too corrupt.

This is a typical case of why tape drive backups should be outlawed. The backup tape was the reason that the data went into such a deep state of chaos. Why did it happen? Only God knows? Been enough prayer about it. This is good news because I can finally stop an effort to achieve the impossible. Yet it's sad because these are nice folks and I wanted so to make the transition to new software somewhat more livable. Failure is hard to accept. I am disappointed with my attempts...especially the results.

Tomorrow I hope to change the mood of the site and find more interesting things to post. I am in the middle of trying to find out why a server is crashing and it's eating my lunch. K, enough. Back to that project, Let's hope tomorrow finds the usual happy, happy, joy, joy returned to the beach house.

The Moaning Tech Strikes Again!

Gosh what a long day. Rolled outta bed at 3:45AM due to an inability to return into the land of Nod. Drove 50 miles and reinstalled a machine that was severely infected on a network. It recovered nicely and worked fine. After a period of time re-establishing this refurbished client PC on the network, the server crashed. It crashed 3 more times after some investigation and 3 restarts. Now I have it on the bench and working like mad to find the problem. It's still crashing. It may be time to move their data to another server and let them use it temporarily. This one looks like it's headed back to Dell. Now if I can get it to stabilize long enough to grab data. You know, if I believed in reincarnation I might suspect that I was Hitler in a past life. Well, at least Attila the Hun.

My Power is Edgy

My head has been stuck inside a machine all day trying to recover data on a Dell PowerEdge 1600 single Xeon server. This is the 11th time I've created the original scenario and it looks like the light at the end of this tunnel is fading. If only the tapes hadn't overwritten the data for backup with bad data. The mirror drive was corrupted as well. This network needs to be redone. There are just too many weird things about it. I believe in the KISS approach, Keep It Simple Stupid, and the last 'S' is me. When people start creating domains and active directories in small networks they should consider future usage and speed instead of complicating data and data usage just because they can...Oh well, let me get back to it. Let There Be Electrical Light

Verdana and Mal are going home tomorrow. Uncle Snake returned to Baton Rouge/New Orleans earlier this week due to a sense of duty concerning his profession. He is here to pick them up and they return to Baton Rouge early tomorrow. The electricity is up and running in their neighborhood and there was no damage to their house other than massive debris in the yard. Trees were down all over the area, but the flow of traffic has returned to nominal normal. Uncle Snake cleaned out the freezer and fridge before spoilage became a problem. Their beloved cats are also home and very happy to be there. All in all, things were most fortunate for them. Many others weren't so lucky.

Big E said his roof was ruined and damage was worse in his area. He lives about 5 miles from Verdana, Uncle Snake and Mal. The eye of the storm passed over his house and he reported it as freaky! Big E always has been one for understatement, lol. I am just glad that everyone is safe and the mass exodus was beneficial in saving lives. Now we await hurricane 'Ike'. This one looks nasty. Keep all these good folks in your prayers. They will need help in recovering and weathering this next storm.

My Fellow Nerdlings, Here Is An Awesome Value!

I am happy to report utter satisfaction with the Turtle Beach Ear Force X1 headset. At 60 bucks a pop this is borderline thievery. I have a set of AKG headphones that cost several hundred dollars and this X1 set blows them away!! The bass is phenomenal. My friend Tishomingo Betuglia heard them and went straight to Circuit City and bought a set. He's amazed too. Not only is the sound great, the microphone is awesome. All my TeamSpeak friends report a definite increase in clarity. On top of all this they are very comfortable. The earpads and headpiece are made out of very soft leather and I believe they will be durable down through the years. A very nice added feature is the XBox input on the inline switch. This is a product that is an awesome value. Fits nicely alongside my ZBoard and Logitech G5 laser mouse. Now if I can just get the uber gaming machine back online. My kingdom for a good 939 SLI motherboard!

Decision Made

Watched part of Cindy McCain's speech and managed to stay awake to see the acceptance speech. Senator McCain did an excellent job for someone that is not excited about standing in front of a teleprompter. At first I watched on the Socialist TV channel...uh, uh, I meant PBS-TV. After hearing continual rhetoric and comparisons concerning Obama, I did the right thing and switched to Fox.

I pray to God that our nation's population is intelligent enough to see the obvious differences in these two candidates. You know, I'll be the first to admit that I don't agree with Senator McCain on all issues, but he is more aligned to my way of thinking than Senator Obama. As far as experience and leadership qualities there is no question as to which nominee is most qualified. Senator McCain has a lifetime of experience and dedication and Senator Obama is a mere lst semester freshman.

I encourage everyone to vote against giving the reins of our government to a fledgling politician. In order to vote against Obama, you must vote McCain. Every Democrat I know and those that I count as friends especially are supporting Senator McCain. Sometimes you just have to do the right thing. The Good Lord knows I'd cross party lines if the tables were turned. Our nation needs experienced leadership with strong moral fiber. IMHO, there's only one person running that is qualified. Be sure and watch the debate later this month. I think it will help some folks make a decision. My decision is made: Vote for a true American hero and patriot: Vote McCain.

Briefly

Sometimes there are not enough hours in the day. Missed posting yesterday due to long day that started early and finished late. Fell asleep in the chair and missed most of the GOP Convention. That is my same situation today. Not complaining, mind you, just informing. Am tired and need sleep. Will pray for our friends on the coast and all others. Later y'all.

Where in the World?

I wish NBC-TV would send Matt Lauer to the beachhouse on his next little jaunt around the world. I'd open the door and hit him as hard as possible between the eyes. Then I'd drag his sorry ass across the pavement and leave him on the other side of the street. This would help keep the smell down. NBC and their head monkey boy suck. I watched as he tried to torture some conservative about the storm preparation this morning and almost threw the remote at the TV. Lauer harped on and on about the Katrina travesty of 2005 and barely mentioned the present predicament. He then launched yet another tirade against conservative political types and then bowed to his demi-god Obama. Thankfully, I used the remote to change to Fox News where the journalists were letting a liberal whacko have his say. AS a matter of fact it was Jon Voight. Isn't he the President of the Hollywood Halfwits? Or is that Mr. Susan Sarandon, aka Timmyboy Robbins? Please forgive me - my conservative Democratic friends; you know I love each and every one of you. There was no editing during the Voight interview and the commentators were polite and well mannered. It's sad that Jeopardy (it's property of NBCTV) can no longer play during lunchtime at the beachhouse.

Everyone have a safe Labor Day. Please keep all our friends on the coast in your heart and prayers. With jerks like foul-mouth-talking-taking-the-Lord's-name-in-vain-on-national-TV Nagin in charge, they need all the help they can get. Okay, time to get off the soap box and use it to finish the laundry. Rant over.
